Some women begin to experience symptoms of early pregnancy shortly after this occurs. Four to five days later, the fertilized egg, then known as a zygote drifts down the fallopian tube to the uterus. Between two and three days after this occurs, the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine lining and the placenta begins to form.

Over the next 17 days, the baby, now known as an embryo begins to form body parts, and by 7 weeks old, all basic body structures are basically formed, the baby is now called a fetus. By this time the result of a home pregnancy test should be accurate. This is because after the egg attaches to the uterine lining and as the placenta forms, the body produces a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin or HGC. Early in pregnancy the level of this hormone rises quickly sometimes doubling every two days. Pregnancy tests are able to detect this hormone in the urine, producing a positive result.
